Lucifer Review A Day
5x12 Dan Espinoza: Naked and Afraid
Get ready for another quick review.
This is definitely a bottle episode but very enjoyable and answers something from 5x08 - What was Lucifer’s revenge plan for Dan?
That question really does sum up the episode. It shows Dan in all his awkward, failing but always trying self and is a great show and reminder of how good the character is and how much he is loved not only by others but by fans of the show.
There are great call backs and links to things from the past and with these we see how he has changed from the beginning. Kevin is brilliant and season 5 really has been his season to show up what he is made of.
Now the other thing to mention is that we find out all the hi jinx are constructed by Lucifer when Dan does and after everything Dan deserves a medal lol.
There are great moments of comedy through out but the exchanges at the end are great. Dan is devastated at the thought that Maze died but she didn’t and when she jokes that she wouldn’t die for him you see his and realise he would for her, she gets this too and adds “At least I wouldn’t get shot in the chest for you” to which I say “take it back now” (IYKYK).
Then there is Lucifer and Dan’s moment. Lucifer is rightly pleased it went off without a hitch and explains how it came about to Dan. Lucifer under selling Dan’s detective skills is on display when he admits the hardest thing was keeping the Detective out as she is a detective and would have known straight away, when Dan points out he is one too Lucifer just laughs. But Lucifer’s prank had an unexpected outcome, it showed Dan that he is a good person because he always tries to make the right decision, this shakes him from his “I’m going to hell” funk. That was how Lucifer could plan the prank because he could count on that (side note: how wonderful uh big picture of Lucifer). Of course this is not what Lucifer wants at all after all the whole point of this is summed up in the best line.
The episode has small links to past and future episodes but it is a bottle episode that is a fun ride and gives an under appreciated but great character and actor a moment to shine.
