Crawl But Not Too High

Flicking through Netflix searching for something to watch but not necessarily commit to I came across Crawl. It ticked a lot of my boxes; horror, natural disaster and movie so it didn’t require a long bout of attention. Not to mention it stars Kaya Scodelario who I have loved since Skins.  In many ways this achieved what I wanted it to, easy watching that didn’t require focus but it also left a lot to be desired.  From a story perspective and acting as well the lengths that Haley (Kaya) was willing to go to just to check in on her father didn’t make a lot of since as we saw more eye rolling and bad mouthing of him than concern when the sister rang concerned she couldn’t reach him. But she still ignored radio and law enforcement advise to not go. The other bigger issue for me was the fact that she was so blasé about the fact she was heading towards a HURRICANE. She drives through torrential rain and heavy winds groaning and squinting like she is going though your typical ...

Love, Monsters and Comedy; Oh My!

Astroid heads to earth - earth sends rockets to stop them- saves earth. Actually dooms earth due to the chemical compounds needed for the rockets which rain down and changed cold blooded creatures which meant about 95% of the population was killed in a year.   That is the summary of how we have gotten to the point where the movie starts. Side note: I could listen to Dylan do an audiobook all day.   Joel is living life as a single person in a bunker where everyone has found their soulmate, and narrates letters to Amy. Joel is the cook and has a friendship with Mavis the non-working robot. The bunker is breached and Joel is eager to join in but apparently he gets scared to the point he is a liability which is explained to him in a clearly rehearsed speech. This is something we become familiar with not long after.  Flashbacks establish Joel and Aimee as a cute somewhat typical high school couple, up until the world started to basically blow itself up.  Back to no...

Only One Thing To Say...

Just Say Yes There is nothing better than sitting down and watching a romantic comedy. Thankfully in recent years we have some new ones on offer unlike that dark period around the 2010’s. The newest one being the Dutch Netflix original, Just Say Yes .  This movie doesn’t stray from the typical romantic comedy troupes; girl (Lottie) is dating a guy (Alex) who is all wrong, they break up she meets a guy (Chris) who is all right but both don’t express their true feelings, girl gets back together with wrong guy before finally seeing the light and finally getting together with the right guy.  Of course as with all good romantic comedies their are nuances to the story that just make it better. Chris is sweet, helpful and a little cocky which adds to his appeal as he isn’t a clean cut obvious “good” guy, Lottie’s group of friends are stereotypes of happily single and not happily married but there is a hilarious side moment for one of them involving Lego and an unfortunately pl...
Everyone Wants to Be a Hero But are we special enough? I saw this on Netflix and was interested in it. Of course I had some reservations but not enough to dissuade me from watching. With all the superhero movies and tv shows what was one more? This review will contain spoilers for Thunder Force, currently available on Netflix. We start the movie at all good places to start a superhero movie – the beginning. We quickly find out that Emily was orphaned as a child as her geneticists parents were killed in an accident called by a Miscreant, those who are genetically predisposed to be sociopaths – naturally. This leads her to move schools were she is bullied because Emily is smart and determined to continue her parents work and she meets Lydia. Lydia is tough and a loner but not by choice. The two form a quick friendship but after a few years Emily’s determination and Lydia enjoying life and doing typical teen things like concerts get in the way and the two part ways. Fast-forwa...
