Lucifer Review a Day
5x15 Is this really how it ends? Aka Rip my heart out why don’t you.
This episode is completely crushing, real and hard to watch let alone rewatch, and it also may be the greatest episode of Lucifer so far.
I could go on for ages about this but short is sweet so instead I’ll just talk up key performances and things I noticed.
This episode made me realise how truly under appreciated Dan is and the Dan/Chloe relationship is. They went from divorced parents co-parenting to the type of friends who aren’t even friends but family. No one knows Dan like Chloe and no one knows Chloe like Dan. They have formed a beautiful understated but real (especially since Dan’s baptism into the celestial world) relationship and this episode hits hard in reminding us of that.
In that vein Kevin Alejandro and Lauren German are continually underestimated performers who do shine in this episode. The way their scene just ripped my heart out is a real testament to that. I have watched many tv shows with many deaths but none hit the way this one did this was nearly impossible to watch and isn’t any easier rewatching it because the emotions feel so real and raw. Lauren in particular is phenomenal in the way she doesn’t just perform the emotions but she makes it so tangible. You feel her hopeless defiance in her “no”, you feel her desperate need when calling to others and you the clear devastation she is holding at bay. Similar with Kevin his fear just hits you in the stomach with its real and rawness.
Of course I can’t talk about this episode with out talking about Scarlett Estevez who has a future so bright I look forward to telling people I remember her at the beginning of her career. I love how she was given her own space to really react because Trixie may not be on screen as much but she is still much loved. Her going to the other key adults in her life after hearing the news was heart breaking. Maze trying so hard to follow her instructions but not and Lucifer not being able to lie (brilliant by Tom and Lesley) just made it real for her and us. I’d like to see the person who wasn’t moved to tears with her “I want my daddy”.
The mother/daughter moment was also a chef’s kiss of despair. I don’t know who had a say in what so I’ll just give props to director (Ildy Modrovich), writer (Jason Ning or Lauren’s but the way Chloe breaks the news to her daughter is so gentle and embracing of the absolute cruelty of her daughters new reality. One she has gone through so when she says “I know” the truth of hit just lays on you. If I have anything negative it was that I would have liked to have spent more time focusing on them but at the same time if that happened I probably wouldn’t have made it past that.
As for the things I noticed, shout out to the other actors. When Amenadiel, Linda, Ella, Lucifer, Maze and Chloe find out Dan is dead they each react differently and our in their own grief of losing a friend and colleague. But when Trixie enters you see them all (save for Chloe) realise this is much bigger than that, that their friend was a father to a little girl who was about to have her whole life changed. They were in the background but the change in their reaction is still so noticeable that it really demonstrates how involved this cast is.
Oh and to complete this tear soaked review peep Chloe behind Trixie when she asks Lucifer to tell her that her dad isn’t dead. I think that was the start of my heart being shredded after it had already been pulverised.
Once again though this episode may be the best one of the show. A true masterclass in what happens when everyone is on top of their game and brings their all.
Now this episode isn’t just this but this is a key portion of it. We also have great Deckerstar moments, as well as Dan and his important people. But I just had to get my feels and awe out for Dan and the cast.
P.s: This was a brilliant non Dan moment.
